last year the only way a brand like Panini Obsidian can be introduced : Boldly.
The newest iteration of the company’s popular Optichrome technology,
Obsidian Football bucked the traditional Prizm blueprint by introducing
a black base design fused with neon highlights. It was new.
It was different. And it was an instant success.
Now, Panini America officials are bringing Obsidian to the NBA
and they’re bringing it directly to consumers through iCollectPanini.com.
Set to launch Thursday at 10 a.m. CST, the online-exclusive 2018-19 Panini Obsidian
is just as sharp and just as edgy as its football counterpart, it’s also just as loaded with content.
On average, each hobby box (five cards per box, 12 boxes per case)
will deliver two autographs, two parallel or insert cards and one base or Rookie Card.
Highlights of the product are many and include . . .
The stunning Electric Etch parallels that created such
a stir in football are featured throughout the product
for all base cards, Rookie Cards and autographs (all numbered to 49 or less).
Rookie Jersey Autographs featuring some of the hottest
2018-19 NBA rookies and all numbered to 75 or less.
The rare Vitreous insert that showcases
10 of the NBA’s top past, present and future stars.
The Galaxy autograph chase showcases the game’s
biggest superstars and greatest legends.

2018-19 Obsidian Overview
The Obsidian line is one that takes chromium
in a darker direction than other sets.
The black backdrops and outlined etching pop but
in a different way than collectors might be used
to with the likes of Prizm and Spectra.
Base cards have plenty of color in the
form of Electric Etch parallels.
Colors make the basis for these cards, however, it’s not solid
backgrounds or borders like other chromium sets.
Instead, it’s all in the outline etchings.
Rookie Jersey Autographs are among the signatures
in 2018-19 Panini Obsidian.
Galaxy autographs are also available.
These come with a die-cut design.
Rookie Jersey Autographs are available,
all numbered to 79 copies or less.
These have a variety of parallels that come
with varying levels of rarity and swatch type.
Vitreous cards don’t have signatures or memorabilia.
However, these regular inserts have a die-cut design
and a superstar-only ten-card checklist.
While this is the first full Obsidian release
for basketball, 2018-19 Panini Chronicles did hint
at the set with some preview cards.

Late and unexpected, 2018-19 Panini Obsidian debuts
with NBA collectors for the first time as a standalone product.
Each five-card box should have two autographs.
The trading card line was initially issued as a 2018 NFL set
and also appeared in the multi-brand 2018-19 Chronicles NBA.
Only revealed about a week ahead of the release, the set
is exclusive to Panini's online store. Boxes sell for $120 apiece.

Boxes will carry an initial price of $120.

With hits occupying two spots in the box, that leaves three base
or inserts in each box of 2018-19 Panini Obsidian.
Collectors can find one base card or rookie card per box.
Several Electric Etch parallels add to the base chase.
Parallels and inserts combine to average two cards per box.
This includes the limited Vitreous die-cut
for 10 of the league's best players.

The 2018-19 Panini Obsidian checklist continues
with the Rookie Jersey Autograph lineup
for the top first-year stars.
Each rookie autograph relic is numbered to 75 copies or less.
Other possible autograph pulls include Galaxy die-cut cards
with a star-filled background.
The signed cards have Electric Etch parallels, as well.
