when Promo or Sample Cards were as much a part of a new product release
as fancily worded press releases and mylar wrap.
These so-called Sample Cards were a way for manufacturers
to preview the look and feel of an upcoming set.
And the more unique the design or the technology, the more the need for the Promos.
And so it is with Panini America’s upcoming 2017-18 Panini Vanguard release.
Last week, hobby distributors and select hobby shops were on the receiving
end of what has become an increasingly rare delivery in the current collecting climate :
Honest-to-goodness Sample Cards showcasing the upcoming Panini Vanguard ,
a proud brand from the hobby’s past that last appeared on the market
during the 2002-03 hockey season.
A lot has changed in the almost 20 years since; Vanguard, however
(as those nifty sample packs prove), still looks great.
What those Sample Cards don’t necessarily indicate, though,
is everything else 2017-18 Panini Vanguard has in store.
Set to arrive early September, each hobby box
(five cards per box, six boxes per case) will deliver, on average,
four autographs and one base card or parallel.

But Vanguard is not an entirely new line.
It has just been a while.
Drawing from Pacific’s portfolio, it’s being reinvented
for the current era.
When Vanguard debuted more than 15 years ago,
it was one of Pacific’s premium lines.
But that was a different time in the hobby.
2017-18 Panini Vanguard sticks with the high-end,
only by today’s standards.
In this case, that means lots of autographs.
Each five-card box comes with four signed cards.

In fact, all autographs are hard-signed.
They mix both rookies and veterans.
There’s also a variety of designs that are somewhat subtle
and others that are anything but.
On the first-year side, there’s Rookie Signatures,
the newspaper-inspired Hot Off the Press Autographs,
and Prime Prospects Signatures, which also incorporate swatches.
Cosmic Force and High Voltage are among the autograph
inserts with bold designs.
Both take a literal approach to their themes.
Panini presents “the hobby’s new Vanguard” and features nothing
but ink in every top of the line box.
Panini Vanguard is not an entirely new program.
Vanguard was one of Pacific’s premium brands when it launched
around 15 years ago and Panini reinvented this for the current season.
Just like before, 2017-18 Panini Vanguard continues
to provide high-end boxes with a plethora of on-card autographs.
Each box contains one base card and four signed cards.
The rest of the sets features only autographs.
Collectors can find on-card autographs in the rookie-driven
newspaper-inspired Hot off the Press, Rookie Signatures,
and Prime Prospects.
Beyond the Arc Scripts, Cosmic Force, High Voltage and In Focus
features a distinct style, while collectors can find more NBA stars
in Postseason Heroes and V-Team sets.

with collectors thanks to the hard-signed autographs and hefty stock.

2017-18 Panini Vanguard Base Set
Billed as "one of the industry's most collectible base sets
2017-18 Panini Vanguard combines very thick card stock
with a holographic finish.
Boxes contain one base card, numbered to 49,
or an even more limited parallel.
Although the vast majority of cards in 2017-18 Panini Vanguard
come signed, there is a base set.
But it’s not going to be easy to finish.
Regular base cards come numbered to 49 copies.
Parallels are also available.
Lending itself to the premium nature of product,
base cards are thick and done with holographic foil.
Pacific originally debuted Vanguard back
in 2000 with baseball.
Over the next couple of years it would expand
into hockey and football as well.
The brand hasn’t been used since Pacific ceased production
and was sold to Donruss Playoff (which later became Panini America).
2017-18 Panini Vanguard Autographs
Other than the base cards, the rest of the 2017-18 Panini Vanguard
checklist features only autographs.
Those chasing the '17-18 rookie class can look
to Rookie Signatures or the Prime Prospects autograph relics.
Courtesy of The Vanguard Press, Hot off the Press displays a newspaper-style
design to house the on-card signature.
Featuring distinct looks, some big-name signatures are waiting
in the Beyond the Arc Scripts, Cosmic Force, High Voltage and In Focus sets.

2017-18 Panini Vanguard will arrive September 5 as one of
last season’s final releases.
You might recall Vanguard if you recall some of the products cranked out
by the now defunct Pacific Trading Cards early in the new millennium
(think Tom Brady rookie cards).
Now, Panini gives Vanguard the Lazarus treatment
with an autograph-heavy product making its debut as an NBA brand.
Cards will be printed on thick, holographic card stock
Four of the five cards in each pack of Vanguard will carry autographs.
There’s a base set, but each card is numbered
to 49 so completing it will be a tough task.
The base set will also have numerous parallels.
will include some highlight-oriented cards from the recently completed
season in its “Hot Off the Press” autograph subset.
Rookie Signatures and Prime Prospects will carry autographs
from some of the year’s top first year players.
Post-Season Heroes Autographed Materials will focus on
the stars of the playoffs with a material swatch and signature.
Other autograph subsets include V-Team Signature Swatches, Cosmic Force,
